Loss
in regional semi-finals is "worst game of the season"
By David Gilles, Photography Editor
A five-game winning streak and an exciting win at Damascus propelled
girls basketball team into their playoffs with lots of confidence.
The Cougars traveled to rival Damascus on March 6 for the regional
semi-finals. In the regular season series between the two powerhouses,
both teams won one game. However, this was not like those first
two games that had gone into overtime. The Cougars could not hit
any of their shots, and the Hornets took a large lead going into
the half.
After halftime, the Cougars still couldn't get anything to drop,
and the Hornets kept increasing their lead. QO couldn't muster anything
and ended a very successful season, 49-32.
"I was very disappointed that the season was over,"
head coach Dennis Drown says. "I was discouraged that the most
important game of the season happened to be our worst game of the
season."
Despite the loss in the semi-finals, Drown feels more than satisfied.
"It was a tremendous success," Drown says. "The players
had a lot of things to overcome when I got hurt early on, but it
turned out to be all right."
In the regional quarterfinals, QO took on the Wootton Patriots
for the third time this season March 4. The Cougars started off
slow and sloppy, turning over the ball multiple times, and allowing
the Patriots to open with a 10-2 lead. By the end of the first quarter,
the Cougars calmed down somewhat and came back to take a 16-15 lead.
From then on, the Cougars never looked back, despite continuous
turnovers, they outscored Wootton in every quarter thereafter.
The Cougars hit 14-18 free throws, and sophomore guard Samerria
Crowder scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first half.
Junior guard Treena Limgenco came off the bench and added ten points
to help the Cougars advance, 65-49.
"It felt awesome being able to contribute to such a big playoff
game," Limgenco says. "Of course there's the pressure,
but I just kept telling myself that all I needed to do was execute
what I've been practicing this whole year."
Senior guard Brittany Dorsey led the team against Watkins Mill
on February 25. The Wolverines came to QO as the Cougars looked
to extend their winning streak to five, and the Cougars did exactly
that. Dorsey finished with 18 points, ten of which came in the second
half. QO looked strong in their last game of the season, heading
into the playoffs with their fifth straight win, 53-41.
The Walter Johnson Wildcats gave the Cougars a scare when they
came to the Cougar Den on February 14. The Wildcats shut down the
Cougars in the first quarter, only allowing them to score eight
points. WJ kept it up going into halftime with the lead, 27-22.
The Cougars got their act together in the second half, scoring 32
second half points while keeping the Wildcats to only 18. QO won
the match, 54-45. Dorsey led the team with 15 points and senior
center Megan Dowdy added ten.
For the second time in the season, QO played the Damascus Hornets,
although this time the Cougars wanted to avenge a loss against the
Hornets a month earlier. The match went back and forth all the way
through, as it was tied at half and at the end of the third quarter.
The game was forced into overtime, where junior guard Lisa Hann
converted a set of free throws to put QO up by one with a minute
left. Then Limgenco made a layup with only 18 seconds left to seal
the victory for the Cougars. Dorsey and Dowdy both led QO with 16
points each.
The Cougars bounced back from their disappointing loss against
Magruder with wins against Richard Montgomery and rival Northwest,
71-67 and 53-25 respectively.
Drown is already looking forward to next year. "Hopefully
we can continue the success," Drown says. "We have Treena
[Limgenco], Lisa [Hann], and hopefully Sam [Crowder] coming back.
I'm very optimistic. We're even going to get the height that we
haven't really had in the past in [sophomore] Katie Purdy."
