CLUBS
Secret agent club: not so secret

By Gail Baltazar, Reporter

A group of girls watch the television in awe as Sydney Bristow beats up yet another government enemy with high-kicks and martial arts moves, all while wearing stilettos and high-end designer fashions, keeping every hair in place.

Scenes like these are what made Alias a hit show. With its complicated plot, attractive stars, and intense fight scenes, the show has drawn hortes of fans and fanatics around the country. At QO, these "fanatics" mutual love of the show each week in room 324.

Junior Laura Stelling started the Alias club after she and a few friends, all avid fans of the show, made plans to get together one day to watch previous episodes as a sort of marathon before the season premiere. A person who was eavesdropping on their plans suggested they create an actual club, since Stelling had titled her guest list "The Alias Gang."

Thus, the Alias club was born.

"I loved the idea of having an Alias club," Stelling says. "It meant being able to talk to people about what was really going on in the show and sharing theories."

The club, a loose union of about twenty fans, meets every Thursday during lunch. The group watches as much of that week's Alias episode as it can in the forty minutes of lunch. After the episode or during the boring parts, they hold discussions on several different topics. They talk about anything from the ever-complex plot to actors like Michael Vartan to guessing what might happen next.

The club members even spend time discussing the show's music, ranging from rock bands such as Jimmy Eat World and jazz singer Norah Jones. Stelling acts as president and helps answer the other members' questions about the show. The club has approximately ten regular members and ten people who occasionally attend meetings.

Alias' storyline centers around Sydney Bristow, played by actress Jennifer Garner, and her dangerous and exciting occupation as a double agent for the CIA. Originally, the character unknowingly worked for an evil organization, posing as the CIA agent known as SD-6. However, she eventually discovered she was working for the wrong side when SD-6 had her fiance killed. She now works for the real CIA, spying on the organization she continues to work for. Contributing to the story is Sydney's handler, Agent Michael Vaughn adding some much-needed romance to the action scenes. Also in the mix are an ancient seer named Rambaldi, Sydney's dysfunctional family and other organizations such as the real-life KGB.

The show can be hard to follow for viewers who haven't seen all the episodes or followed it since the beginning. It is also difficult for fans who miss an episode, to get back into the story. But the Alias Club is there to help clarify any misconceptions that might occur.

Future plans for the Alias Club are modest. Members are hoping to hold meetings on Tuesdays in addition to Thursdays; one more so there will be one day to watch the episode and another day to hold discussions. Also, members may soon be going on a trip to the Spy Museum.

Stelling, however, has bigger plans. "A trip to the CIA, or Los Angeles would be great," she says.
